During my time in the Great West, I deliberately made no plans or reservations ahead of my trip except for the otherwordly Blue Swallow Motel, which deserved an honored commitment. I would start thinking about finding a place to lay my head shortly before bedtime (which was also about the time I would think: crap! I haven't eaten dinner yet, and it's 9:30. What's open?), and most of the time Mercury was up to the task of procuring me the spur-of-the-moment lodging I happened to choose. (Mercury/Hermes is the Greek/Roman god of travelers.) I failed to get into the Monterey NonSmokers Motel the first couple of nights in Albuquerque, and had to wait until Mercury was in a better mood and decided to grace me with a room at the Monterey in the middle of my trip.
