In this image, the stars of Ophiuchus, the serpent-bearer, rise behind the peaks of the Gosaukamm mountain range, which are illuminated by the light of the first quarter moon. The mountain at left is the Donnerkogel (peaking 2054 meters above sea level), while the distinctive shape of the Bischofsmütze (2458 meters) is visible in the distance at right. These mountains now seem to reach up to the sky, but about 200 million years ago, they were coral reefs in a tropical sea.
This image is a stack of 85 individual exposures, each of 30 seconds (Canon EOS 550D at ISO 1600, 20mm, f/2.8, with Cokin P830 diffusor). Near the right edge of the image, some of the star trails are interrupted by clouds moving trough the scene. A single image, showing "fixed" stars, can be seen here.
